"In 2006, the New Mexico Veterinary Medical Association celebrated seventy-five years of serving the veterinary profession in New Mexico. This project grew out of a desire to put on paper some of the experiences of our colleagues, which would be lost forever as they retire from active practice."
"Veterinary medicine is currently a profession pursued by college-educated individuals who must pass a test of competency before being licensed and allowed to practice their art inside a given state border. Each state controls its own testing procedure and licensing policies. This was not always the case. During the late 1800s and into the early 1900s, motivated men who had an interest in being a "horse doctor" could, and often did, apprentice themselves in the art of the blacksmith. At the turn of the twentieth century, a number of private schools had taken up the task of creating a curriculum and training a man in the art of medicine and surgery. Women would not begin to enter the profession until the 1940s......"
